Today marks the 50th Anniversary of Tanzania’s independence. This is the second time I’ve celebrated a country’s 50th anniversary (the first being Ghana in 2007). During my swahili class this morning, my teacher was telling me that many people are unhappy with the current state of the country. What has the country really made of itself…

It was my privilege to meet Fikadu today. He’s a 9 year old Ethiopian boy who loves to play soccer, hide-and-seek, and learn English in school. He was shy at first, but warmed up to me after I showed him how to use my camera (which I had to pry out of his hands before departing)….
