PROTECT THE BASKET

For the last couple weeks, Maputo hosted the 2013 Afrobasket Women tournament. 12 teams from 12 countries.

Basketball in Africa? Yeah, I was surprised too. But they love it here. And I love that because I grew up on basketball. Its my sport of choice (after tennis).

Besides seeing people care about basketball, what surprised me even more was seeing people care about WOMEN’S basketball. You would not believe the crowds that showed up for these games. Every game was packed (oversold actually). The fans brought vuvuzelas, whistles, trumpets, fog horns, drums, flags, scarves, signs … for women’s basketball? Indeed and it was awesome. Best basketball games I’ve ever attended.

The Mozambique team (known as the Samurai) did fantastic … winning a few nail biters and making it to the final where we lost to Angola unfortunately (in another nail biter).

Here are a few photos from the weekend games.
