October 2005 Photos

I wish pictures did justice, but it's all I can do to share with you what I'm seeing and experiencing. I hope I will be able to post pictures every other month or so.

1: I am one of 50 trainees who arrived Sept. 23, 2005. 16 of us are SED (small enterprise development) and the rest are Environment and WATSAN (Health & Water Sanitation).

2-4: After spending 6 days in Accra (the capital of Ghana), we went to visit current volunteers out in the field in groups of one or two. I went to Nkoranza to visit Kathy (a 3rd year health volunteer). They were celebrating the 5th anniversary of the HOPE Association, which promotes HIV/AIDS awareness and abstinence. These photos are from the event that hundreds of people from the community attended. It was a great success for Kathy!!

5: Fufu - I think this is the most popular dish in Ghana. It's basically boiled yams (or plantains) and kasava that have pounded to death until it's like a dough. It's typically served with groundnut (like peanut) soup and fish. I wasn't a fan of fufu when I first got to Ghana, but it's starting to grow on me. And yes, people eat with their fingers ... always the right hand, never the left ... and out of the same pot. I'm not quite accustomed to this one yet.

6: Downtown Techiman. This is where I have been living for training. I will be moving to my permanent site in the upper east region Dec. 3rd, 2005.

7: My homestay family - the Boakye's (pronounced Boe-chee). Left to right: Carl (20), Mary, me, Abigail (8), Carlos (24), Cynthia (26), and Augustine. Linda (18) is missing - she was away at school while we took this picture.

8-14: Group excursion to monastery just outside Techiman.

15-27: SED field trip to Kintampo Waterfalls, Mole National Park, and Tamale. * Since it takes 2 days to travel to Accra from the upper east, Peace Corps has 2 suboffices in Ghana. One is in Kumasi and the other is in Tamale. The Tamale suboffice is the closest to my site in the upper east, so I'll go there every other month or so.
