-6: December 1st was Farmer's Day & HIV/AIDS Day. Every district has their own celebration, but I attended the one for the whole Upper East region. My organization (BWFA) was rewarded with a donkey cart and donkey for all of their hard work.
I attended a funeral for a very well-known politician - Ayeebo Asumda. He was the first regional minister in the Upper East, which opened the door for many future politicians from the northern sector of Ghana, including the current Vice President. He did many great things for the people of Binaba. He also had 14 wives, 45 children, and sooooo many grandchildren ... some of whom live outside of Ghana in the US and UK. You can imagine how surprised I was to walk up and see this car with a Fulton county/GA license plate.
November - January is watermelon season!!! My friend, Rose, sells watermelon in the market. This is her daughter, Stirling, "helping" bring the load to the market.
-15: I spent Christmas with 3 other volunteers in Tengzug, a village not far from Bolga. On Christmas morning, we got up early to watch the sunrise. Zach opened one of his presents that his family sent.
This is a local house in Tengzug. It's different from every other house I've seen in my region. More than 300 people live in this one house. The chief built a 2-story structure in the middle; I got on the roof to snap this picture. It is the belief that the gods do not allow zinc roofs.
-17: When I returned to Binaba, I celebrated Christmas with close friends Rose & John (and kids) and my housegirl Mary and her new husband Johnson. We pounded fufu and ate with light soup with guinea fowl meat ... a popular Ghanaian food that is mostly served in the south. It's a treat for us up north!!
This is only way Nancy will let me snap her picture... while she's drinking pito. I've known her for more than a year now and she's still afraid of me and my white skin.
-20: To celebrate New Years and do something special for my neighbors and close friends, I made goat kabobs and cooked rice & beans. I had a house full of kids and people and everyone had a really good time!! The kids played futbol (soccer) outside until it got dark. Then they all came inside and had a dance competition. It was a great way to bring in the new year!!
