February 2007 Photos
December through February is watermelon season. They seem
more sweet here than at home, but that could be because it's
so hot and it tastes so good. Of all the fruit I can get here,
watermelon (pronounced water-me-low) is my favorite. My friend, Malik (he's wearing the
yellow shirt in pic #4), took me for a bike ride in the bush to
visit the watermelon farm. The farmer we went to visit seriously
lives in the middle of nowhere. Not another house for miles. The way
he constructed his compound of rooms is different but pretty
neat. And I thought my house was isolated!!
Pic #5 are my cat's 2nd litter of
kittens. It seems these litters are going to be a pretty regular
thing (every 6 months). The good thing is that people want and are
asking for her kittens. I don't really know why except that I
actually feed her and therefore she and her kittens are healthy.
Instead of collecting money for the kittens, it's tradition to give
a fowl.
I went to the U.S. for a short visit this month. The main reason for going
home was to celebrate my
granddad's 80th birthday. It was so great to see all of my family,
my 2 new nephews who I had not met yet, close friends, and
co-workers from GPC and Southern Company. Of course, seeing them for
such a short time has only made me miss them more and I'm a little
homesick. It was strange being home, but even more strange coming
back. All of these pictures are from the party at my uncle's house
just outside Washington DC. The hat my granddad is wearing in the
first pic was a gift from my village when he was here last November.
These pictures were taken not far from where my mom lives in Maryland.
I especially enjoyed the cold weather while I was home!! Believe it or not, I had not
seen snow like this before. I printed a few of these pictures and
brought them back for my friends in Binaba to see. They laughed at
all the sweaters and heavy clothes I was wearing, couldn't believe I
was actually walking on a frozen lake (pic #14), were amazed at the
half frozen waterfall (pic #16), and then asked how and why we had a
fire in the middle of the room (pic #18). They also asked why I
didn't bring Sophie (the dog) back to Ghana with me. :)
