April 1st, 2006

Happy April Fool’s Day!! I’m not going to “fool” any of you in this update … any joke I pull might give my parents heart attacks, so I’ll refrain this year. What isn’t a joke is that it was 110 degrees today (again … in the shade). They tell me I only have one more month until it starts to cool off. I did finally get electricity in my house, so I at least have cold water and a fan going at night!

March was actually a busy month for me. It started with Ghana celebrating it’s 49th anniversary of independence on the 6th. This is a really big deal here – just as America’s independence day celebration – but it was neat to celebrate another country’s independence from England. Toward the middle of the month, I attended a week long workshop on “capacity building” (which was basically a condensed Business 101 course) that my organization was invited to attend. I hope to use some of the information to give mini-workshops for women in Binaba.

I also did some traveling down south for a meeting. While I was down there, I stopped in Techiman to visit my host family for a night. They were so happy to see me as was I happy to see them. They cooked my favorite meal and I stayed up late catching up with the girls. It felt so good to be there … they truly are my family in Ghana. I always feel welcome there, which is a good feeling being so far away from my family in America.

BWFA women harvested their onions and we’ve started to fill our storage units. We’re trying to get a loan to purchase more onions in the market. We’ll store all of the onions until the market price goes up in June/July timeframe. The women now start preparing their farms to grow rice during the rainy season.

Something really neat happened this past week. We were able to see the solar eclipse. Apparently, it was only visible in the Atlantic, Turkey, Asia, and Africa regions so it was exciting to be here for that.

I have more training way down south (near Accra) coming up this month and I’m hoping to visit a few other volunteers while I’m down there. I’m sure I’ll have plenty pictures and stories from that trip. Until then however … take care!! New pictures are posted!!
